Everything feels good but we put on warmer gear before going in to Cedar Breaks National Monument (a new path no one has been on before). We go as high as 9400 feet on this road.
Well, cold and...snow!
Four osprey circle overhead on this path. I whistle to each of them. We pass "Duck Village" a high mountain resort offering all kinds of out door activity. We are driving on a passable 2 lane road with Aspin, Pines, snow...cold.
But Cedar Breaks lava flow is unexpected and stunning. A large, ancient, lava flow that goes on for quite a while.
We drop down a canyon following a river that takes us to Cedar City UT where we catch 56A West and follow the bee hives to Nevada. This roadway in to NV is very low key, only a metal cattle guard to announce we have arrived.
We stop for lunch in Caliente at the Knotty Pine Restaurant. Beautiful old knotty pine paneling reminiscent of McCloud decorates the walls here. And cute pine cone print curtains are on the windows.
It is mothers day and the one waitress is very busy. It takes some time but our food is very good and very necessary.
At the very last place we can get gas, we do. Next gas is 150 miles, the sign says.
We follow hwy 93 across NV on the Extraterrestrial Highway passed many dead cows "hollowed out cows" Ron says.
We are watching the afternoon rain clouds get closer and see the lines of water where the rain is falling. Initially we skirt most of the rain.
About the time Ron and I are running low on fuel we are caught in the worst storm of the day. Gary thinks we only rode in it for about 2 miles but we are suddenly drenched, cold and low on gas. It is scary going to Tonapah, which seems like 100 miles away. Crap! I shout out loud.
But...we do make it, one bike and one trike saying "Lo". I get the hypothermic shivers as we get enough gas to get to our hotel (which is in view down the street). As we check in, the building is WARM!!
The good part is "The Tap Room" Restaurant is right a cross the street so no fuss about beer or food.
Gary calls Brad DeBoer and Brad comes to visit with us while we eat. Good barbeque food and salads. Laura has much of her salad left and a guy so drunk comes and asks if he can have the left overs. Soooo Drunk!!! We turn in soon after we eat.
